In the Olympus of postmodern and contemporary mythology, populated by superheroes born from the pen of brilliant and complex personalities, stands out the figure of Batman, conceived by the American cartoonists Bob Kane, born Robert Kahn, and Bill Finger, which provided the inspiration for the action and fantasy film Batman Forever, third chapter of the film series composed by Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), directed by Tim Burton, and by Batman & Robin (1997) directed by Joel Schumacher himself.
The Batman costumes that appear in the film, the so-called Batsuits, are known for their innovative realization in a not very dense foam rubber blend that, thanks to the extreme lightness of the suits, has given an extraordinary flexibility in the action scenes to Val Kilmer and his doubles. Furthermore, the anatomy of the costumes is characterized by the introduction of nipples sculpted on the pectorals, desired by the director and inspired by the sculptural iconography of the Greek gods, of the greater length of the ears, compared to the one of the previous suit of Batman Returns, and of the graphic trend to the three-dimensionality of the logo placed on the chest. It is composed by a black foam cowl with leather flaps (with inner Velcro catch), felt-lined shoulders, abdomen and chest, on which is printed the emblem of Batman molded in resin, in one piece.
Appeared for the first time in May 1939 in Detective Comics no. 27, as for the predecessors Superman and Spiderman, the identifier of Batman is represented by the costume, worn to hide his identity and to instill fear in the adversaries, and the character’s logo, an archetypal bat with wings spread placed on the chest. A heraldic symbol of security and mutual aid, the idea of the bat was conceived by Bob Kane on the model of some drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. Emblem of justice, also known as The Dark Knight, Batman has no superpowers and is born as a secret identity of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy businessman who, after witnessing at the age of eight the robbery and murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, by Joe Chill, decides to avenge them and to undertake a personal war against iniquity and crime so that Gotham City returns to be a safe and secure place. Raised by the butler Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce spends his adolescence and youth training intensely in the performance of martial arts when, one evening, thinking of the need for a disguise similar to that of a dark and nocturnal creature in order to terrorize criminals, appears to window a bat that shows him the way to follow. So, with the help of Lucius Fox he founds the “Wayne Entreprises”, developing an ultra-sophisticated technological equipment. He collaborates with the police commissioner James Gordon in the fight against the underworld, against the criminals Joker, the Enigmist, and Harvey Dent, a former district attorney who disguised himself as the character Two-Faces, after half of his face was disfigured with vitriol during a process. From here, an exciting and breathtaking action and phantasy movie in which Batman is called to fight against Two-Faces (played by Tommy Lee Jones) and his ally Edward Nygma (played by Jim Carrey), inventor of the so-called « Box », a dangerous device able to manipulate minds by watching television programs.
